Grant Hello, I found your website and I noted that you have done extensive research into the presidents. Of interest to me is Ulysses S. Grant. I'm helping a friend research her PA Grant family and came across a very interesting article on Hannah Simpson's family (mother of Ulysses S. Grant). Montgomery Leger, Pottstown, Montgomery County, PA, January 13, 1880 General Grant's Mother Hannah Simpson, widow of Jesse R. Grant, and mother of General Ulysses Simpson Grant, who is still living in Jersey City, N. J. in her 81st year, was born in Montgomery county, PA, in the extreme northern part of the township of Horsham, half a mile from the Bucks County line. Her father's name was John Simpson, Jr., and the house in which he lived is still standing, a short distance below Steever's mills, although it has not been occupied for the last five years. The property is owned by John Duddy, of Whitpain. It is build of stone, but an older building, part stone and part logs, adjoins it, which was erected, it is supposed, before the revolution, while the stone building was built at a later date. The Simpson farm contained over 164 acres, and was owned by John Simpson, Sr., great-grandfather of General Grant, who purchased it in 1763, and died in 1805 or 1806, and it then passed to his son. He had three children, John Jr., Hannah, married to Benjamin Hough, and Ann, married to Jonathan Smith. Rebecca Simpson, wife of John Simpson. Jr. and great grandmother of General Grant, was the daughter of Samuel Wier, of New Britain, Bucks County, who died about 1811, at the age of 75 or 80. Another daughter of Samuel Wier married Robert McKinstry. Numerous descendants of Benjamin Hough, who was an uncle of Gen. Grant's mother on her father's side, and of Robert McKinstry, an uncle on her mother's side, still reside in Bucks County. Gen. Grant has two or three times paid visits to these relatives. The Houghs and McKinstrys, of the same generation as the General, would be his second cousins. John Simpson, Jr., father of Mrs. Hannah Grant, the Ex-President's mother, sold his farm in Horsham, Montgomery County, in 1817, to John Myers and about a year after that moved to Ohio. He was twice married, first to Hannah Wier, who died after ten years or twelve years, and by whom he had four children Robert, Samuel, Mary and Hannah Simpson; and to Sarah Hair, by whom he had one child. Gen. Grant's mother, Hannah Simpson is still well remembered by some old residents of Horsham Township and vicinity some of the gallants of sixty years ago as a sprightly, agreeable girl of eighteen or twenty years, who had attended meetings in the neighborhood, and had already begun to receive admirers. Her husband, Jesse R. Grant, was born in the western part of Pennsylvania, and was a son of Noah Grant. It is said that the old Simpson dwelling house in Horsham is soon to be torn down. The principal facts given above are compiled from a lengthy and interesting account in the 'North Wales Record'. Betty Burdan, Berks Co., PA
