SIR MICHAEL HOGG, 8th Bt, who has died aged 75, was a genial member of The
Daily Telegraph's staff for more than 30 years, serving successively as editor
of its Peterborough, arts and letters columns.
A relaxed, friendly man, Hogg combined an awareness of what should be done with
a knowledge of what would not be done. He could be acerbic when crossed by
pushy youngsters, whether they were new executives or had just come down from
university. But, kind to others, he liked nothing better than resolving
difficulties, picking up stories and enjoying a leisurely gossip in El Vino's
or the Kings and Keys public house, conveniently sited next to the Telegraph
office in Fleet Street.
Michael David Hogg was born on August 19 1925 into a family descended from a
Calcutta barrister who had been created a baronet in 1846 after serving as an
MP for Beverley and for Honiton and twice being chairman of the East India
Company.
In 1887, the baronetcy was subsumed into the title of Lord Magheramorne of Co
Antrim, for five generations; it then descended through a junior line from the
first baronet to two soldier cousins, the second of whom, Sir Arthur Hogg, was
Michael's father. The Conservative politician and former Lord Chancellor Lord
Hailsham of St Marylebone is a kinsman.
Young Michael was educated at Sherborne, where he took up the piano and won the
Marson Greek Prize. He was then commissioned in the Grenadier Guards. He was
posted to Germany as a liaison officer at the end of the war, but only fired
one shot in action, at a plump German fleeing on a stolen bicycle. He missed.
After leaving the Army in the rank of captain, Hogg read History at Christ
Church, Oxford. He then went to work for the Salisbury and Winchester Journal,
covering stories by bicycle, concentrating mainly on the arts.
In 1951, he joined the Telegraph as a reporter. Aided by his mordant wit, Hogg
showed himself willing to put his hand effortlessly to any task. He assisted
Colin Welch, founder of the Peter Simple column, and briefly and unhappily took
charge of the sub-editing of the paper's magazine when it was launched in the
Sixties; then, after a period in the features department, he settled in as
deputy to the pernickety Frederick Salfeld in the Peterborough room.
On succeeding Salfeld as the fifth bearer of the pseudonym "Peterborough" (the
name at the bottom of the diary, taken from the newspaper's address at
Peterborough Court off Fleet Street) Hogg brought a new informality to the
column. He encouraged his staff to gather stories widely, but preferred to
concentrate his own efforts on opera and wine, taking himself to some of the
best tables in London and visiting Europe's finest vineyards.
After arriving at the Telegraph offices at 10am, he would regularly have a
couple of pints of beer in the Cheshire Cheese then go off to his working
lunch. Whatever had been consumed, he would return in good order (though with
perhaps a need for black coffee) before efficiently pulling the column together
for presentation to the Editor at 6pm.
It was a tribute to his good nature that when a former member of his team, Tim
Heald, wrote the novel Deadline (1975), Hogg made no comment at finding himself
lightly disguised as St John Derby, editor of the Samuel Pepys column, who is
discovered stabbed to death at his desk with a paperknife after dining with a
City livery company.
On being asked if Derby was "what is known as a character", the paper's
proprietor Lord Wharfedale comments that Derby was "a journalist of the old
school".
After seven years Hogg was appointed arts editor, where he was entirely in his
element, supervising the introduction of a new make-up for the page and taking
every opportunity to attend the opera.
In the swirl of change that followed the transfer of the paper's ownership in
the mid-1980s, Hogg was shunted off to edit a much reduced letters column -
"the Fleet Street equivalent of being put in charge of a Mongolian power
station in the Soviet Union", the cartoonist Nicholas Garland commented in his
published diary.
Nevertheless Hogg mastered the computerised technology when the paper moved to
Docklands, in east London. He found a coffee stall which made excellent bacon
sandwiches, and also a congenial pub for lunchtimes.
After retiring at 63, he added to a leisurely life by taking up painting. He
and his wife Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir Terence Falkiner, 8th Bt, whom he
married in 1956, continued to hold a summer party for friends in the garden of
his Barnes home.
In 1995, he succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father Sir Arthur at
the age of 99. He himself is succeeded by Piers, the eldest of his three sons,
who was born in 1957.
