descendants of Thomas Watkins d.1678, Charles Parish, York Co. VA
Notes:
I have made namy unproven assertions to put this tree together. I am
motivated to build a Watkins tree using individuals in Warwick County and York
County, Virginia. Many other trees that can be found on the internet, also
unproven, make connections between Warwick and York County Watkins men and
families in Henrico and Prince Edward Counties. It is a fact that residents of
Warwick and York Counties were relatively static and did not migrate to the
extent families elsewhere in Virginia did. I believe the Watkins family of
Warwick and York County, Virginia, were from those counties from the very
beginning of the colony. I list here the connections that I regard reasonable,
but cannot prove.
1. The earliest Watkins man found in records that indicate residence in York
County was Thomas Watkins, who was transported to Virginia before 1635 by
Thomas Weston. THis fact is documented in two pattents recorded in
"Cavaliers and Pioneers, Volume One", by Nell Marion Nugent, 1992. The two
pattens, the first in 1635, listed on page 24, and the second, in 1637,
losted on page 80, are essentially identical and obviously refer to the
same event. The 1637 record reads:
THOMAS WESTON, marriner, 650 acs. Char. Riv. Co.. 9 Feb 1637, p.517. Upon
Capt. John West his Cr. [now Felgates Creek], Wly. into the woods & Nly.
upon Seargent Wayne. Trans. of 13 pers: William Rawlings, Thos. Willis,
Rich. Lacy, Jon. Darbye, Rich. Powell, Tho. Wetherbye, Grace Smith, Thomas
Watkins, John Joyce, Richard Perrin, Dennis Bretherston, Henry Harris, Wm.
Golding.
There is no direct evidence that this Thomas Watkins survived to be the
patriarch of the Watkins family found later in York County, but it is
entirely reasonable to speculate that he was the Thomas Watkins whose death
on 10 Apr 1678 is recorded in The Charles Parish Register, York County.

From these records and a bit of speculation, we make the following family
units:

In The Charles Pariah Register there is a gap between the 3rd and 4th
generation, born between 1702 and 1724, and Thomas Aduston Watkins who was
born in 1786 to Henry and Sarah Watkins. The parents of Thomas Aduston
Watkins were Henry, born 1756 in Warwick County, died 7_May_1798 in Warwick
County, and Sarah Patrick, born 16_Nov_1758 in York County, recorded in the
Charles Parish Register, died 1798, York County. The note in The Charles
Parish Register suggests Henry and Sarah resided in Warwick County. We
seek to identify a Watkins man who was the father of Henry Watkins, b.1756,
and we must look for him in Warwick County.
3. Most of the records of Warwich County were lost when Richmond was burnd in
1865. Precious few Warwick County records survive. Among those that
survive are the County Court Minutes, 1748-1762, which can be found in The
Library of Virginia in Richmond and are published in "Warwick County,
Virginia, Colonial Court Records In Transcription", Richrd Dunn, editor,
The Jones House Association, Williamsburg, Virginia, 2002. These records
document a man named Thomas Watkins who lived in Warwick County and played
an active role in civic matters from about 1748 to 1762. The Dunn book also
shows a record of Thomas Watkins as late as 1770. It is certainly reasonable
to propose that Thomas Watkins of Warwick County, born before about 1727,
died after 1770 was the father of Henry Watkins (1756).
Who were the parents of Thomas Watkins of Warwick County? It is certainly
reasonable to speculate that he was the son of one of the Watkins men
documented in The Charles Parish Register. We have no grounds to specify
which Charles Parish Watkins man was the father of Thomas Watkins of Warwick
County, so we nothing but speculation. We know that Henry Watkins (1695)
and his wife Agnes had a son named Henry, born in 1718 and that Agnes died
in 1719. It seems reasonable to speculate that Henry had a second wife and
moved out of Charles Parish. We speculate that Henry Watkins (1695) and his
second wife were the parents of Thomas Watkins of Warwick County.
4. There are two Watkins housholds listed in the 1810 census for Warwick County:
Cath Watkins and Frances Watkins. I believe these two ladies are daughters
of Thomas Watkins of Warwick County, who died before 1810. Henry Watkins,
son of Thomas Watkins, is not listed as a head of household in 1810. I
believe he is living with his sister, Frances. The composition of these two
census records are:

We presume Cath was the older daughter because she has the slaves.
5. There was a William Watkins from York County who served in the American
Revolution (DAR Ancestor No. A122424). According to the DAR, he was born
12_Nov_1762 in York County and he died in 1840 in York County. He married
to Anna Rawlins (Rollins), daughter of Vincent Rawlins. She was born in
York County on 23_Jun_1785 as recorded in The Charles Parish Register. They
were married in 1801 in York County. Who were the parents of this William
Watkins?
There seems to be no evidence to specify the parents of William Watkins,
b.1762. Again we are left to speculate. It seems reasonable to speculate
that he was the son of William Watkins (1721), John Watkins (1724), or
Henry Watkins (1718). In the absence of actual information, we arbitrarilry
place him as a son of William (1721)
6. William Watkins, born 1809, Poquoson, York County, Virginia, married to
Eliza Linton on 19_Dec_1836 in York County. Their descendants are easily
traced. Many trees on the internet claim Thomas Aduston Watkins was the
father of William Watkins (1809). Others claim William's father was a
William Watkins. Examination of all known Watkins housholds in Warwick and
York Counties for 1810 shows that the only family with a male child born
between 1800 and 1810 was that of William Watkins (1762) of York County.
Absent any other evidence, we place William Watkins (1809) as a son of
William Watkins (1762)
7. There was James T. Watkins, who was a Captain, CSA. The consensus of many
published trees is that he was born in 1822 in Poquoson, York County,
Virginia and his father was Vincent Watkins who was born in 1795. Who was
Vincent Watkins? There seems to be no evidence to reveal the identity of
Vincent Watkins, but since he seems to come from York County, we are
compelled to propose a connection for him. Perhaps he was a son of William
Watkins (1762) and Anna Rawlins, who was a daughter of Vincent Rawlins.
caveats:
Summarizing the elements of speculation employed to build this tree:
1. We speculate that Thomas Watkins who was transported to Charles River County
(York County) before 1635 was tha patriarch of the Watkins family of York
County and Warwick County and that he was the same Thomas Watkins who died in
Charles Parish in 1678. We estimate that he was born about 1615, probably in
England.
2. We speculate that Thomas Watkins who died in Charles Parish in 1678 and his
wife, Faith, who died in Charles Parish in 1683 were the parents of Henry
Watkins of Charles Parhsi, who with wife Ann, were parents of the following
children: William (1689), Henry (1693), Ann (1695), Mary (1697), and John
(1702). We estimate that Henry Watkins was born about 1665.
3. We speculate that Henry Watkins, b.1693, son of Henry and Ann of Charles
Parish, had a second wife after the death of his first wife, Agnes, and that
Henry Watkins and his second wife were the parents of Thomas Watkins of
Warwick County. We estimate that Thomas Watkins of Warwick County was born
about 1727 and that he died after 1770.
4. We speculate that Thomas Watkins of Warwick County and his wive, Elizabeth,
were the parents of Henry Watkins, b.1756, who with his wife, Sarah Patrick,
were the parents of Thomas Aduston Watkins.
5. We speculate that William Watkins, b.1762, was a son of William Watkins,
b.1721.
6. We speculate that William Watkins (1809) was a son of William Watkins (1762)
based on the 1810 census records.
7. We speculate that Vincent Watkins (1795) was a son William Watkins (1762)
based on the possibility that he was names after his grandfather, Vincent
Rawlins.
