Cousin Bessie's DAR file
This information is from the file of supporting documents submitt to DAR by
Cousin Bessie to prove her descent from the Revolutionary War patriot, Richard
Hogg Sr. of Gloucester County, Virginia. Some of the material is unreadable.
Notes:
1. Cousin Bessie made her application for membership in DAR in 1957, about 10
years before her "Hogg" book was published.
2. It seems that the main document she used to "prove" her descent from Richard
Hogg Sr. of Gloucester County was the biography of her brother, William Edward
Hogg, in "Virginia Democracy", by Robert C. Glass, published in 1937. This, of
course, is not a primary source. Although not certain, it seems likely that
Cousin Bessie was the source of information used by the author of this
biography.
3. The pay voucher that she refers to in her book is not the orginal colonial
period document, but a certified transcript from an un-named government agency
in Washington DC. This still qualifies as a primary document, but there is
nothing to suggest that the Richard Hogg in question was the one from
Gloucester County.
4. The note on pages 15-16, written to support the claim that Richard Hogg Sr.
of Gloucester County was Richard the patriot, referes to the "Hogg" book
indicating that it was written after 1967. The hand writing is not that of
Cousin Bessie. I think it might have been written by Cousin Thelma. The note
indicates that the writer was aware of Richard Hogg of Richmond, but does not
seem to be aware of the estate settlement in Chesterfield County. Also, this
note claims that Richard Hogg Sr. of Gloucester County was listed in the 1782
tax list.
